Q&A with Women's Tennis Alum Nicole Krykanov '21

I was looking for a school that had the perfect balance of rigorous academics, competitive athletics and social life – and Davidson is just that!
What made you choose Davidson over other opportunities?
I knew I wanted to attend Davidson as soon as I stepped onto campus. I felt immediately that it was a close-knit community from everyone's smiling faces and how friendly everyone was.
If you were speaking to a recruit, what would you tell them about the highlights and challenges of being a scholar-athlete at Davidson?
I personally loved being a scholar-athlete at Davidson because it kept me motivated and structured. I knew I had to work hard to keep up with classes, tennis and outside activities. However, I was constantly surrounded by other motivated and like-minded people, which made it easier to stay on track with everything.
Philanthropic gifts from alumni, families and friends of Davidson Athletics help fund our 21 Division I programs at Davidson. What did that support mean to you and how do you believe support for your program enhanced your experience and that of your teammates and program overall?
Support from alumni, families and friends meant the world to me and my team. I felt so blessed to have such incredible facilities, especially for a small school like Davidson. I can't thank you all enough for the support.
You were a scholar-athlete at Davidson during unexpected and challenging circumstances in our country and around the world. How has that shaped who you are now versus who you were when you first came to campus, and how do you think it has affected the direction your career path is taking?
While being a college student during a pandemic is not ideal, it made me feel grateful for the little things about Davidson. I was lucky to be able to play my last season and be surrounded by my amazing teammates and friends.
What's next for you?
I plan to pursue a career in public relations. I am currently working for Meltwater as a sales consultant.
Favorite memory as a Wildcat?
This is a tough question. While one specific memory doesn't stand out, what comes to mind is the little interactions with people on campus. Saying hi to someone every 30 seconds on my walk to class, seeing a friend randomly in the Alvarez College Union and pulling up a chair to eat lunch with them, late nights in the library where I did more goofing around than actual work – these are the memories I am most grateful for.
