DAVIDSON, N.C. – Gorant named a Scholar All-American, while Davidson wrestling earned DI Team Scholar All-America recognition by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), announced by the organization Thursday.
Gorant, a rising-senior and biology major from Coopersburg, Pa., was tabbed a Scholar All-American for posting above a 3.2 GPA and winning over 60-percent of his matches. The 133-pounder finished the season on a 3-0 win streak that concluded with his second fall of the season in the final seconds over Dominic Chavez of Presbyterian. Gorant enters his senior season 36-26 with 12 career pins.
The Wildcats returned to the NWCA Scholar Team list with their highest placing since 2010, checking it at 13th. Davidson's team GPA of 3.42 catapulted them into to the top half of the 30-team list. It marks the fourth time in six years the 'Cats have made the grade as a squad.
"This is a huge accomplishment for Kyle Gorant and our entire wrestling program," said head coach Andy Lausier. "The team's success in the classroom is the perfect illustration of the excellence our wrestler's seek in their commitment to living the Davidson Wrestling lifestyle. I couldn't be prouder of this team, especially considering all of the obstacles we faced this past year."
Campbell (15), Gardner-Webb (22) and Appalachian State (30) were the other Southern Conference teams listed, while Long Island took the top spot overall.
