Q&A with Women's Soccer Katherine Smith '21

I was first led to Davidson by the way it seemed to fit everything I was looking for in a school: top academics, strong athletics and a small, tight-knit community.
What made you choose Davidson over other opportunities?
I loved Davidson from my very first visit. I already knew about the great academics and strong athletics, but when I visited, I fell in love with the beautiful campus, the incredible community and most importantly, all of the wonderful people.
If you were speaking to a recruit, what would you tell them about the highlights and challenges of being a scholar-athlete at Davidson?
To me, the highlight of being a scholar-athlete at Davidson is my team. My team has become my family, giving me some of the best friends I've ever had – people that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
Philanthropic gifts from alumni, families and friends of Davidson Athletics help fund our 21 Division I programs at Davidson. What does that support mean to you and how do you believe support for your program has enhanced your experience and that of your teammates and program overall?
I truly appreciate all of the philanthropic gifts from alumni, families and friends of Davidson Athletics. With your support, we don't have to worry about our gear, meals, travel logistics and so much more. We can dedicate the entirety of our focus to playing the sport we love. With this commitment, we can perform to the best of our abilities every time we step out onto the field, knowing we have a huge team of people behind us, supporting and cheering us on.
You've been a scholar-athlete at Davidson during unexpected and challenging circumstances in our country and around the world. How has that shaped who you are now versus who you were when you first came to campus, and how do you think it has affected the direction your career path is taking?
Being a scholar-athlete during this extremely unprecedented and challenging time has definitely shaped me as a person. I have become much stronger and more resilient. These times have encouraged me to appreciate the little things in life and enjoy every moment, not taking anything for granted.
What interests/paths do you plan to pursue after Davidson?
After Davidson, I will be teaching for two years in Hawaii with Teach for America before heading to Atlanta to work at Bain as an Associate Consultant.
Favorite memory as a Wildcat?
I have too many incredible memories as a Wildcat to pick one, but some of my favorite memories come from preseason. I love coming back to campus after summer break and getting reunited with all of my teammates. It's always so great to see everyone and to spend so much time together for a few weeks before school starts just focusing on soccer and lots of fun team bonding.
