'Cats Qualify for Their First A-10 Tournament
4/11/2021 6:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Davidson Wildcats have more soccer to play.
Davidson has qualified for the four-team Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Soccer Tournament by finishing league play 4-2-2 and with 14 points, the most in the five-team A-10 South Division.
The Wildcats, 6-3-3 overall, are in the league's postseason event for the first time and will enter as the No. 3 seed. They'll face No. 2 UMass (5-2-1) Thursday at 5 p.m. at Saint Louis.
"It's a really big step for the program in a difficult year," said Davidson coach Adam Denton. "In a typical year, eight teams will qualify for the tournament, but this year, it's going straight to the final four. So it's a huge achievement for everyone associated with the program, not just the players on the team this year but the previous years as well. It's a huge step forward to compete on the level with these teams. We're excited about the next challenge. Thanks to everyone — coaches, players, administration, support staff — for helping us get here."
Thursday's other semifinal will feature No. 4 Dayton (4-3-1) and the top-seeded host Billikens (8-0). The final is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Wildcats closed the regular season Sunday with a 1-1 tie at George Washington, earning their second straight draw in a rematch with an A-10 opponent they lost to previously.
Hailey Braemer gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 29th minute, bouncing in a short score from the left side.
"Great service into the box by Kat Smith, and Hailey Braemer finished coolly in front of the goalkeeper," said Denton.
The Colonials evened the score with a Maria Pareja goal in the 79th minute.
