PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Davidson Wildcats battled through three sets, including a 29-27 third-set result, before falling 3-0 to Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne University this evening.
The match featured the 'Cats attacking .108 on the night, and senior Remi Lehnertz leading the way for the fourth straight contest with 11 kills. The California native also spotted six digs to go along with two block assists. Rookies Bella Brady and Sophia Hritz tallied 20 and 10 digs, respectively, while fellow classmate Jessie Doyal and senior Sydney Champaigne combined for 29 assists.
Duquesne torched the net for a match high .389 attacking percentage in the first, and finished the day with 45 kills on 119 swings (.252). The Dukes out-served Davidson, seven aces to two, but the two teams were evened up with 50 digs apiece.
After falling 25-17 and 25-12 in sets one and two, the 'Cats dug deep for a tremendous third set effort. With Doyal beginning the set on a service ace, the setter led the 'Cats to an early 3-0 run capped off by a kill from Hritz. After falling behind 8-7, Brady would put Davidson back in the mix with a four-point run from the endline in addition to a kill from Lehnertz.
While the Dukes looked to close out the match with a 23-22 advantage, Lauryn Albold and Sola Omonije came out with a huge double block to knot the game up at 23. Champaigne and the 'Cats relied on steady serving to take a 27-26 lead late, but strong swings from the Dukes and offensive miscues for Davidson allowed the home team to take a 29-27 third set win.
The Wildcats will return to play next Friday evening for a 5 p.m. match up against Dayton University, back inside Belk Arena.
