NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For the fourth time this season, the Davidson lacrosse team has won multiple Atlantic 10 Conference weekly awards, as Amanda Monahan and Julianne Carey were named A-10 Defensive and A-10 Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday afternoon.
Monahan and Carey also earned the awards on Feb. 23, and this week's honor is Carey's fifth of the year. In all, four Wildcats have earned A-10 weekly honors this spring. Gianna New and Sam Rippley were named offensive players of the week on Feb. 16 and March 9, respectively.
Monahan, the sophomore goalkeeper from Marblehead, Pa., had a career-best 15 saves against No. 16/18 Virginia Tech on March 17, as the Wildcats posted a 15-8 win. It was Davidson's first victory over an ACC opponent since 2003 and first against a ranked foe in the modern scoring era.
Monahan held Virginia Tech to eight goals on 27 shots, including 23 on goal. The Hokies scored just three goals on 10 free-position shots, thanks to Monahan's work in net.
Carey totaled four points for the second straight game, scoring two goals and assisting on two against the Hokies. She had a game-high seven draw controls and was 1-2 on free-position shots, while grabbing two ground balls and causing one turnover.
Monahan, Carey and the Wildcats open A-10 play this weekend with a Friday trip to George Mason and a Sunday contest at George Washington.
