ST. LOUIS – Davidson's trend in the Pioneer Football League continues to rise as the Wildcats were tabbed to finish second in the Spring Preseason Coaches Poll, announced by the league Monday.
Only seven teams received votes among the eight league members participating this spring – Presbyterian will play a PFL schedule, but is ineligible for the league title. Davidson earned 28 points, while the reigning champs, San Diego, was the unanimous favorite to win the conference. The Wildcats edged Drake (25) and Stetson (22).
The Wildcats finished 2019 fifth in the league, earning five league wins and ending 8-4 overall. The six Division I FCS wins were the most in a single-season. Davidson's biggest jump in 2019 was on the defensive side, ranking first in the league in scoring defense (20.7), rush defense (108.9) and total defense (278.1).
The 'Cats return 10 starters including four-year starter Tyler Phelps at quarterback. Junior captain Chibuike Odo also returned healthy and joins fellow captains Jalen Jefferson, Eli Turner Jr. and Cade Vela.
Davidson opened the season with a narrow defeat at then-nationally ranked Elon, 26-23. The 'Cats open a condensed PFL slate Saturday, Mar. 13 at Stetson.
