DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Powered by clutch performances from their underclassmen, the Davidson College men's tennis team edged out Campbell University this afternoon, 4-3, to pick up their first win of the 2021 season.
The doubles teams came out strong and swept the Camels, allowing the Wildcats to head into singles play with an early advantage. Maxwell Kachkarov and Alejandro Solares competed from court one for the second straight match, and took down Campbell's No. 1 team, 7-6. The duos of Yash Parikh & Douglas Macintosh and Camden Mazzoni & William Clark followed suit, winning 7-5 from courts two and three, respectively. Kachkarov and Solares improve their doubles record to 2-2 on the year, and carried their early afternoon success into the singles matches later in the day.
"Our doubles came through for us to start off the match strong," said Head Coach Drew Barrett. "Our underclassmen carried the load for us today. I'm really proud of how they handled that pressure."
The 'Cats fell behind 2-1 midway through the day, as Campbell's No. 2 and No. 4 singles picked up early victories. Kachkarov tied up the day at two points apiece, after defeating Campbell's Lukstins in a three-set battle. The freshman won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 4-6, and ultimately came back with a commanding 6-0 third set win to clinch his court's victory.Â
Davidson trailed 3-2 as the day was nearing its end, but not before Solares and William Clark would come up clutch for the comeback 'Cats. From court six, Solares took down Campbell's Otin by 6-4 and 6-2 scores that tied up the match. Finally, from the No. 5 singles match, Clark downed the Camels 6-3 and 7-6 to ultimately clinch the Wildcat's first victory of the season. The win was also just the second for Clark in his Davidson career.
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 to take on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.Â
