NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Two Davidson Wildcats made a strong impression in the league's opening weekend, as Gianna New and Julianne Carey have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference's Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
New, the Atlantic 10's Offensive Player of the Week, and Carey, the league's first Rookie of the Week this season, led the 'Cats to a 1-1 week, as Davidson fell to No. 15 Duke on Friday night before bouncing back with a solid 14-10 victory over Furman on Sunday.
Against the Blue Devils, New tallied two goals and one assist, off just three shots. The junior was 2-for-2 in her shots on goal, and then came back on Sunday to score a career-high five goals against the Paladins. The Bedford, N.Y. native led the Wildcats with a team-high five points against Furman, and also picked up 12 draw controls, marking another career-high for the junior midfielder.
In her college lacrosse debut, Carey came out swinging, as the Pennsylvania native recorded the first point of her Davidson career, with the Wildcats' first goal of the season, against No. 15 Duke. Carey brought her Friday night success into Sunday's tilt as well, as she once again scored Davidson's first goal of the day, but this time scoring back-to-back goals to give the 'Cats an early 2-0 lead against Furman.
With the conference honors, the 'Cats have now earned Atlantic 10 weekly recognition in back-to-back weeks, as Anna West earned a Rookie of the Week nod in the last week of the 2020 season last March.
New, Carey and the rest of the Davidson Wildcats will be back in action this Friday night with a 6:30 p.m. match up against East Carolina from inside Richardson Stadium.
