'Cats Comeback Falls Short Against VMI as Wrestling Drops a Pair of SoCon Duals

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Wrestling dropped a pair of Southern Conference home matches at John Belk Arena Saturday afternoon, falling to Chattanooga, 37-6, and VMI, 24-18.
The Wildcats comeback fell short in the latter match against VMI. Freshmen Anthony Spera and Jaden Hardrick won back-to-back bouts at 165 and 174 to cut the Keydet lead to just one. Spera recovered from a slow start to pick up a major decision, while Hardrick used an offensive second period to overwhelm his VMI opponent and earn four team points to get the 'Cats back in it.
After a forfeit to start the match, Kyle Gorant (133) and Gavin Damasco (141) quickly righted the ship, picking up a pair of decision victories to knot the score at six apiece. VMI rebounded to take a 15-6 lead before the freshmen duo cut into the deficit. Senior heavyweight Mitchell Trigg ended the match on a high-note for Davidson, picking up a major for his second win of the season.
The 'Cats opened the day against a tough Chattanooga squad. The Mocs held Davidson off the team scoreboard for much of the match despite strong efforts from Gorant and Hardrick. It wasn't until 197-pounds when junior Finlay Holston posted a first period pin to break the shutout.
With the losses Davidson falls to 1-3 overall and in SoCon duals.
Davidson won their two exhibition bouts. Freshman Garrett Stewart scored a major decision against his opponent from Chattanooga, while classmate Jake Fernicola notched a first period fall against VMI's second heavyweight.
Davidson returns to action Saturday, Jan. 30 in Charleston, S.C. for a SoCon clash with Campbell and the hosts from The Citadel
