Davidson vs. Georgetown
Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019
Setting the Stage
• It's the 2019 season opener, with Davidson coming off a 6-5 campaign in 2018, its first winning season since 2007, capped by a memorable goal line stand against Butler.
• The 27-20 victory is the third straight season-opening Wildcats' win and the first defeat of the Hoyas since 2005.
• The win starts a three-game streak and a stretch that sees the Wildcats win four of their first five.
• The 0-1 Hoyas prove to be a worthy opponent, winning their next four games.
The Action
• Davidson's record-setting offense and an improved defense build a 20-0 halftime lead before the Hoyas rally to make it a tight contest in the final quarter.
• The Wildcats score on all three of their first-half possessions, marching 87, 91 and 99 yards to the end zone, with backs Wesley Dugger and James Story (twice) scoring on short runs.
• Georgetown manages just 74 yards and four first downs in the first 30 minutes, as Davidson dominates the time of possession, playing nearly 23 minutes of offense before the intermission.
• The Hoyas tie the game at 20-20 late in the third quarter.
Down the Stretch
• Will Wicks scores the game-winning touchdown with 4:54 remaining, capping an 11-play, 87-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run on third-and-goal.
• The Davidson defense holds on the ensuing Georgetown drive, allowing the Wildcats offense to drain the final 3:22 of clock and seal the win.
In Quotes
"I'm really proud of the perseverance. Put all the talent out the window. That takes guts, that takes determination."
