Davidson pitcher Bennett Flynn has been named to Collegiate Baseball's Freshman All-American team, the publication announced this week.
Flynn, of Mill Valley, Calif., finished with an 0.90 ERA and led the Atlantic 10 with four saves in seven appearances and 10.0 innings. He held opposing hitters to a .125 average.
"Bennett had an exceptional season," said head coach Rucker Taylor. "He has a high level of care for his teammates and his performance. He pitched well in high-leverage situations, and his teammates and coaches have a lot confidence in him. Bennett showed a ton of growth on the field over the course of the year. It's great to have him receive this recognition in the culmination of those efforts."
Flynn posted his first save on Feb. 19 in a 7-3 home win over N.C. Central. He entered in the top of the eighth inning with two outs, the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate. He ended the inning with a strikeout, then registered a 1-2-3 ninth.
On March 1, he came on with one out in the eighth and with Davidson leading 7-5. Again the bases were loaded and again Flynn shut the door, this time with back-to-back strikeouts. He struck out two more in the ninth to seal the win.
He threw three hitless, scoreless innings at Charleston Southern March 3 and posted saves in back-to-back games against Siena March 7-8.
"The work Bennett put into his preparation for the season and his personal development was extremely impressive," said pitching coach Parker Bangs. "We're very excited he has the opportunity to receive this prestigious and very well-deserved recognition."
