DAVIDSON, N.C. — Head coach Kim Wayne and the Davidson women's lacrosse team recently selected their team captains for the 2020-21 season and rising seniors Natalie Junior and Olivia Carey were picked as captains.
"I'm excited to work side-by-side with Liv (Olivia) and Nat (Natalie) during a time when leadership will be crucial to our success," said coach Wayne. "Nat is by far one of the best defenders I have ever coached. She grew as a player and a leader throughout her shortened junior season. She is smart, vocal and an extremely hard worker. Liv has a tremendous amount of experience and has learned to use her voice more and more. She is reliable, coachable and extremely dedicated to this program. I am confident both will work well together over the summer and into next season."
The duo has played key roles the last three seasons in helping the Wildcats continue to compete in the challenging Atlantic 10.
One of the top defenders in the league, Junior was a preseason all-conference pick this past year to become the first Wildcat to earn a spot on the preseason team since Davidson joined the A-10 in 2014-15. Though her junior season was cut short this year, the Wayne, Pa., native ranked third overall in the A-10 in caused turnovers with 12 (tops on the team) and was second on the team in groundballs with 14.
Junior's 2019 season saw her earn all-second team honors after starting 16 games with 30 groundballs and 11 draw controls, while tying for the team-lead with 19 caused turnovers. In 2018, Junior broke onto the scene as a freshman and earned A-10 All-Rookie Team honors. She stepped right into the starting lineup, starting all 19 games, while leading the team with 29 caused turnovers, the seventh-most in a single season. The defender added 39 groundballs and 32 draw controls, ranking second and third, respectively, on the team. Junior helped the Wildcats to the second-most groundballs in the Atlantic 10 that year.
A native of Blue Bell, Pa., Carey has been a force on the offensive end during her three-year career. Despite the 2020 season being cut short due to COVID-19, the attacker paced the Wildcats with 14 points on two goals and a team-best 12 assists, which ranked third-most in the A-10. She started all six games the 'Cats played and has started 32 games for her career.
Carey enjoyed a stellar debut season in 2018 that helped her earn A-10 All-Rookie Team honors with Junior. She finished third on the team with 41 points on 18 goals and a team-high tying 23 assists. Carey followed that up with another strong campaign in 2019, ranking second on the team with 39 points behind 17 goals and 22 assists.
For her career, the attacker has collected 94 points on 37 goals and 57 assists, which currently rank fifth all-time in the Wildcat record books.
