KINGSTON, R.I. – Davidson junior Daniel Alvarez won his first Atlantic 10 title in the finals of the 800-meter run Sunday at Mackal Field House on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.
Alvarez closed with a final lap of 26.6 seconds to earn his first A-10 gold medal. The Dobson, N.C., native snapped the tape with a time of 1:55.91, narrowly edging out Anthony Hawthorne of La Salle. Alvarez avenged a runner-up finish to Lawrence in the half mile at the 2019 A-10 Outdoor Championship.
Freshman Bryce Anthony stepped onto the podium in both the heptathlon and 60-meter hurdles, placing second in both. Anthony earned 4,817 points over the course of the seven-event heptathlon and stopped the clock in 8.25 seconds in the open 60-meter hurdle finals.
Davidson placed fourth as a team with 63 points, earning 21 more points than in 2019 and placing five spots higher as a team. It is the second most points scored at an indoor championship since joining the A-10 - the 2017 squad registered 65.5 points and finished fifth.
"We are all very proud of the team this weekend. It was an all-around team effort and the guys really came together on the second day. Many great performances today, but Daniel [Alvarez] and Bryce [Anthony] took it to another level," said director of men's track and field and cross country, Renny Waldron.
Sophomore Raphael Oettl just missed the podium in the 1,000-meter final, stopping the clock in 2:30.64. Classmate Colin Ross placed fifth in the 3,000-meters, crossing the line in 8:30.10. Max Pearson was seventh in the mile, stopping the clock in 4:18.64.
A day after breaking his own 60-meter dash school record in the prelims, junior Miles Hollimon placed eighth. Hollimon lowered his program-best mark to 6.96 seconds Saturday.
Freshman Dylan Ameres stretched the tape 13.81-meters (45'3.75) in the triple jump, the seventh longest mark of the championship.
On the relay side, Davidson took fifth in the 4x800-meter relay (7:48.62) and sixth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:26.81).
On Saturday, sophomore Colin Ross placed eighth in the 5,000-meter with a time of 14:55.25.
Senior Stockton McGuire and Anthony placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the open pole vault. Both raised their personal bests, McGuire cleared 4.50-meters (14'9), while Anthony made it over 4.35-meters (14'3.25). Senior James Davis also cleared 4.35m, taking eighth after incorporating attempts.
Davidson takes a few weeks off before heading outdoors for the Charlotte 49er Classic. The first day of the two-day meet begins on Friday, Mar. 20.
