BOONE — Two late goals by Appalachian State finalized a 3-0 loss for the Davidson field hockey team Sunday, but Wildcats coach Zoe Almquist saw her team play an unbeaten opponent to a tight game.
"I am so proud of the way this team is improving day after day," she said. "We worked a lot in practice this week on outletting — and we were able to beat App's press effectively throughout the day. We worked yesterday on circle defense and today only gave up two corners. We are improving each and every game."
For much of the game, Anna Smarrelli's goal in the 13th minute was the difference. Davidson threatened with five shots on goal, the most since it had six in the season opener against Georgetown Aug. 30. Three of those shots came from Caitlyn Gund, and the Wildcats held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Almquist said while it's disappointing to lose, "it is also motivating to know we are right there. Our next step is figuring out how to finish on the attack side of the ball."
App added two goals in the final three minutes to put it away, as Smarrelli scored in the 58th minute and Rachel Fleig scored with 35 seconds remaining.
Up Next
Davidson will play its next two games at Longwood, facing Merrimack on Saturday, Sept. 14 and the host Lancers the following day.
