Davidson Athletics and the Center for Career Development (CCD) have teamed up to provide a new level of career support to Wildcat scholar-athletes.
Josh King joined CCD over the summer as the assistant director for athlete career development, a new position. He will focus on developing the Career Advantage Program, in partnership with Barings, which provides holistic career advising, professional development, and strategic networking opportunities for all scholar-athletes.
Director of Athletics, Chris Clunie and Jamie Stamey, Executive Director of the CCD partnered with NextPlay, a Durham-based career-development firm, to interview more than 50 current scholar-athletes, alumni, coaches, faculty, and athletics staff to assess the needs of scholar-athletes.
"The assessment showed that, among other things, the strongest step we could take to improve our services was to have someone solely dedicated to programming and initiatives for scholar-athletes," Clunie said.
Following a national search, King was selected in July to fill the new role. Before joining Davidson, he served as the Director of Football Advising and Student-Athlete Development Coordinator with a specialization in Career Development at Old Dominion University.
"It was clear that if we wanted to really make Career Advantage a powerful resource for scholar-athletes, we need to have a dedicated position for the work," Stamey said. "We need someone who has worked with scholar-athletes and understands how their world works. Josh will be a tremendous asset for Wildcat athletes."
The Career Advantage Program will integrate existing CCD offerings to educate all scholar-athletes in multiple facets of career development while also providing additional networking opportunities.
"I'm excited to help scholar-athletes better realize the skill set they gain from athletics and how to translate into the real world," Clunie said. "With Josh and the CCD, we will create programming and initiatives built for our athletes who deal with unique workloads and busy schedules."
While many athletic programs across the country have in-house student-athlete development and career programming, the model at Davidson is unique in that the position is housed in the Center for Career Development.
"Our mission to is to prepare students for educational and professional opportunities that enrich lives of leadership and service," Stamey said. "We do that by connecting them with tools, resources and networks and fostering the development of critical competencies. Our work depends on meaningful collaborations with academic and community partners, and this role is the perfect example of how two divisions – Athletics and Career Development – can work together to make our mission a reality."
