
Davis Ties Own Program Best in Day One of A-10 Outdoor Champs

AMHERST, Mass. –Junior James Davis tied his school record in the pole vault to place third overall on the opening day of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship Saturday at the UMass Track & Field Complex.
In front of a contingent of Wildcat teammates, Davis cleared 4.55-meters (14'11) and claimed a spot on the podium with a third-place finish to help Davidson get on the board at the conclusion of the first day of competition. He previously hit the mark at the 2017 A-10 Championship as a freshman.
Sophomore Daniel Alvarez set a new personal best mark in the 800-meter run, the second fastest preliminary time of the day, 1:51.01. Alvarez was just out-leaned at the line by A-10 favorite, Blaine Lacey of George Mason, in 1:50.99.
Freshman Cory Gaither had a solid day in the hurdles. The Statesville, N.C., native qualified for both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdle finals. Defending A-10 Champion, senior Sean Caveney, will also return for Sunday's 400m hurdle final section.
Senior sprinter Jacob Hostetler will return in the 400-meter run after posting the sixth fastest preliminary time, 48-74 seconds.
Davidson freshman Colin Ross started the day for the 'Cats with a ninth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run. Ross made the A-10 All-Rookie team for being the first freshmen competitor to cross the line, stopping the clock in 31:17.63.
Rhode Island leads after the first day of action, registering 59 points. George Mason (49.5) and host UMass (41) fill out the top-three. Davidson picked up six points and ranks ninth. The Wildcats wrap up the A-10 Championship tomorrow, Sunday, May 5.
