NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Three Davidson baseball players have received Atlantic 10 Conference recognition, the league announced Tuesday, a day before the postseason tournament begins at Fordham.
Pitchers Casey Sutherland and Gabe Levy and outfielder Justin Lebek combined to earn four spots on the 13-team league's awards list. Sutherland and Lebek are second-team selections, while Levy earned a spot on the all-rookie team. Additionally, Sutherland was named to the all-academic team.
"It's nice recognition for Casey, Gabe and Justin," said coach Rucker Taylor. "Each guy was very deserving, and we probably had a few other guys a strong argument could be made for as well. Casey and Gabe have been consistent all season, and Justin has been exceptional since conference play started. Hopefully, we'll play well this week and have a lot of guys on the all-tournament team."
A senior right-hander from Apopka, Fla., Sutherland is 7-1 with a 2.76 ERA in 71.2 innings this season, ranking third in the A-10 in wins and fifth in ERA. He also ranks among the nation's best in walks per nine innings (3rd, 0.75) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (4th, 9.83).
He graduated with a degree in economics. The all-academic honor is his second straight.
Lebek joins Sutherland on the second team. The senior right fielder (Wilton, Conn.) leads Davidson with 41 RBI and is tied for the team lead with three triples. He has hit 10 home runs, which ranks among the A-10 league leaders, and has stolen six bases. Lebek is hitting .264 (.304 in A-10 play) and was a member of the A-10 All-Tournament team a year ago.
Levy, a freshman right-hander from Seattle, is among the league leaders (third) with eight saves and has a 3-1 record in 45.1 innings. He ranks second on the team in ERA (2.78) and appearances (20).
Sutherland, Lebek and Levy lead the second-seeded Wildcats into the A-10 Tournament on Wednesday when they face Saint Louis at 1:30 p.m. at Fordham's Houlihan Park.
