KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Viraj Garewal aced his second hole of the day and Jack Lang fired a 66 in his afternoon round as the Davidson golf team sits tied for fourth following day one of the 2019 Irish Creek Collegiate Saturday.
The two-day 54-hole event is being played on the Par 71, 7,099-yard Club at Irish Creek layout.
After opening with a season-low 279 (-5), the Wildcats carded an even-par 284 and will enter Sunday's final round six strokes behind team leader UNCG (-11).
Florida State (-10) is one back of the Spartans, while East Carolina is four off the lead just two clear of Davidson.
Enjoying one of their most successful campaigns in program history, the Wildcats have a pair of wins and six Top-3 finishes this season, while holding a team stroke average of 288.43.
Lang (-4), who played his first 18 in one-over 72, bounced back with a personal-best 66 to move into a tie for third out of 96 competitors, seven off the individual lead held by UNCG's Bryce Hendrix (66-65 =131 | -11).
Coming off the fifth Top-25 finish of his freshman campaign, Garewal couldn't have scripted a better start, as the Raleigh native recorded a hole-in-one with a six iron on 186-yard Par 3 third hole. He currently sits just outside the Top-10 at 141 (-1).
Alex Ross (143 | T-29), Clayton Tribus (144 | T-37) and Hoke Carlton (145 | T-49) are also in the Wildcat lineup this weekend.
Tomorrow's third and final round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
