ORLANDO, Fla. — Davidson's run in the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship came to an end Friday evening as top-seeded VCU took a 4-0 decision in the semifinals at the USTA National Campus.
The Wildcats' season ended with a solid 14-11 mark, while the Rams (17-5) move on to the championship match Saturday. This is Davidson second time since joining the A-10 it had reached the semis of the league championship.
VCU claimed the doubles point to start the match with wins of 6-4 and 6-2 at the top-two spots, and then went on to win singles matches at No. 1, 3 and 4 to earn the victory.
Coming close to wins was Alexandra Abele at No. 2 and Elizabeth Truluck at No. 5. The junior Abele was up 3-2 in the third set before the match was halted after VCU clinched the winning point. She ended the year with a 14-8 record to give her 45 singles wins through her three years so far. In addition, she and doubles partner Samantha Armas had a 12-10 record this season.
Armas had a personal-best 15-7 record on the season, getting 12 of those wins at No. 4.
Truluck had a fantastic first year for the Wildcats and was tied at 5-5 in the second set of her match after winning the first set, 7-5. The freshman ended with a team-best 17-6 record in singles and had a 12-11 doubles mark, falling in her final match with playing partner Megan Scholvinck at the top spot.
Playing in their final collegiate matches were Scholvinck and Gabrielle Centenari. A native of Mill Valley, Calif., Scholvinck closed out her Wildcat career with 35 singles wins and added another 38 in doubles play.
