‘Cats Continue Hot Start, Down Mercer 10-7 on the Road

MACON, Ga. — Davidson continued its program best start by netting its sixth-straight win to open the season with a 10-7 road victory Thursday afternoon at Mercer in women's lacrosse at Five Star Stadium.
The Wildcats broke up a close game by scoring the first five goals of the second half after ending the first half with a pair of goals to take a 5-4 lead and then held on in the closing two minutes to improve to 6-0. Mercer remained winless on the season at 0-5.
Freshmen Gianna New and Emily Weld led the way offensively with a pair of hat tricks to tie a season high for each, with Weld adding an assist for a season-best four points. Olivia Carey had two goals and two assists for four points to tie her season high.
The trio combined for four goals and an assist during the winning run, as Weld netted back-to-back scores at the 19:28 and 16:52 marks for a 10-4 lead.
Mercer was led by Eva Thorn with three goals and Hailey Rhatigan added two goals and an assist. The duo scored all three Mercer goals to open the game for a 3-1 lead. Thorn later gave the Bears a 4-3 lead with 11:19 to go in the first half.
After going up 10-4, Mercer scored three straight goals in the final 2:21 before Jane Digregorio grabbed the last draw control for the Wildcats at the 1:04 mark and they held on for the win.
Playing another stellar game in goal was Delaney Guhman, as the junior finished with six saves and three groundballs.
Three other Wildcats added three groundballs, while Natalie Junior had a team-best four. Sarah Kopp scooped up four draw controls, followed by New and Digregorio with three each.
Shot count was 28-24 in favor of Davidson, putting 19 of them on goal, while it also had a 13-6 advantage in draw controls.
Davidson plays at No. 15 Duke for its next contest, facing the Blue Devils Monday, March 11, at 4 p.m.
