ROCK HILL, S.C. – Davidson junior Makayla Binter placed second in the long jump, highlighting women's track and field's opening day of the Winthrop Invitational Friday.
Binter narrowly missed her school record in the long, stretching the tape 5.51-meters (18'1) on her third of six attempts of the day. The Rochester, N.Y., native reset the program mark last season at the Atlantic 10 Championship while competing in the heptathlon, marking a leap of 5.60-meters.
Junior Kate Hines raced down the home stretch in 12.22 seconds in the 100-meter dash, the 14th fastest time of the day and if it was not wind aided, would be the fastest time in Davidson history. Senor Tori Long (12.49 seconds) and junior Saidah Rahman (12.74) also ran well in the event.
Long will return in Saturday's finals of the 200-meter dash after earning 1 of 8 spots with a preliminary time of 25.26 seconds. Hines was 12th fastest in the prelims (25.39).
Freshman Hazel Tankard posted a solid time in the 100-meter hurdles, stopping the clock in 15.09 seconds. Classmate Marquia Humphries broke a minute in the 400-meters for the first time in her collegiate career, racing around the track in 59.25 seconds, placing 20th out of 80 competitors.
Davidson returns to the track tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 23 for the final day of the Winthrop Invitational.
