GREENVILLE, S.C. – Coming off their second tournament win of the 2018-19 season, the Davidson golf team continued their impressive play as the Wildcats fired a 283 (-1) Friday and sit third after the opening round of the Furman Intercollegiate.
The three-day/54-hole event is being played on the Par 71, 6,984-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Alex Ross, the 2018 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, paced Davidson on day one with a two-under 69 and is tied for the individual lead with three others. The sophomore made the turn in even-par 36, before carding five birdies and three bogeys on his inward nine.
Virginia Tech (281 | -3) leads the 21-team field by one over Coastal Carolina (282 | -2), while the Wildcats are just two off the pace. The host Paladins are eight back in fourth place following a 289 (+5).
Davidson seniors Jack Lang and Hoke Carlton opened with 71s and are tied for 13th just two behind the lead pack.
Coming off the best showings of their brief careers, freshmen Viraj Garewal (72/T-20th) and Clayton Tribus (76/T-65th) are also competing for the 'Cats this weekend.
The Wildcats will be in tomorrow's afternoon wave and tee off at 12:20 p.m. with Coastal Carolina and Samford.
