BOONE, N.C. –Senior Tony Palumbo battled all the way to the 157-pound final, helping lead Davidson to a sixth-place finish at the 2019 Southern Conference Championship Sunday at the Holmes Convocation Center on the campus of Appalachian State University.
Palumbo, a senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., started the day with a pair of upsets over the second and third ranked grapplers. He sealed his first victory with a late takedown to earn a 5-2 decision over Ryan Resnick of Chattanooga before blanking second ranked Rian Burris of The Citadel, 5-0.
In what would prove to be his final collegiate match, Palumbo battled to a 4-1 decision loss to top seeded Benjamin Barton of Campbell. It was the first time in his career the 157-pounder made a conference championship final and stepped on to the podium. He wrapped up his career 44-55 overall.
The Wildcats earned 22.5 points, up from 13 in 2018. Campbell won its third SoCon Championship, earning 95 points for the team title. Host Appalachian State (92.5) and Chattanooga (62) rounded out the top three squads.
"[Today's results] validate the work we're putting in," said head coach Andy Lausier. "We certainly have a really long way to go, but we have come a really long way, too. This tournament feels a whole lot different than it did a year ago."
Davidson freshman Kyle Gorant had a solid day at his first SoCon Championship, going 2-2 and earning a fourth-place finish. The Coopersburg, Pa., native kicked things off with a dominant 17-1 technical fall victory. Gorant bounced back from a tough loss in the quarters with a 9-2 decision in the consolation semis.
Junior Conor Fenn had another stellar day on the mats for the 'Cats at 184 pounds. Fenn placed fourth overall and earned his team-best seventh pin of the season in his consolation semifinal bout. Fenn opened the day with a 7-1 decision over VMI's Max Gallahan and also got his hand raised for a second period fall over Martin Duane of The Citadel in his consolation semifinal bout.
Fellow junior Hunter Costa also moved on past the championship first round with a thrilling 4-2 sudden victory defeat of third ranked Drew Nicholson of Chattanooga. Costa was able to land his shot and earn a takedown and win to advance.
Freshman Caleb Ziebell also earned a win for Davidson, downing Keegan Connolly of The Citadel by technical fall.
"Last year we did not win a match on the championship side of the bracket and this year we won four, including a couple of major upsets," said Lausier. "I also think that says that this system that we're putting our guys through peaked them at the right time of the year. These aren't the results want to celebrate, but we want to celebrate the progress and improvement that these results are showing."
