Davidson Rolls to 16-Goal Win at Gardner-Webb
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Seven players scored two or more goals and Davidson rolled to its third straight win to start the year with a 22-6 road win at Gardner-Webb in women's lacrosse Saturday at Spangler Stadium.
Davidson ran its record to 3-0, its best start in program history, and scored the most goals since 2014. Gardner-Webb dropped to 0-2.
In a 2-all game four minutes in, the Wildcats broke up the close affair by running off a 6-0 goal run to take an 8-2 lead and never looked back. Capping off the run was freshman Braeden Dial with back-to-back free-position goals.
The reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week had another stellar game, tying her season high with four goals and added a season-best two assists for six points to pace the offense.
Freshmen Gianna New and Emily Weld each tallied a hat trick for the first time this year, followed Sophia Sgroi, Sam Rippley, Katie Woodruff and Sarah Kopp with two goals apiece. Rippley and Sgroi each dished out two assists, while Olivia Carey tied her season high with three assists.
Davidson's bench accounted for nine of the 22 goals and dished out seven of the 12 assists on the day.
Delaney Guhman and Katy Morris were equally as good between the pipes. Guhman allowed just five goals in playing nearly 45 minutes with six saves, while Morris saw her first collegiate action and played the remaining 15:25 of the game.
Gardner-Webb, which was held to just two second-half goals, was led by Talen Francis' three scores, while Abby Hanscom had a goal and an assist for two points.
Shannon Blee and New ended the first half with scores at the 1:30 and 16-second marks for a 12-4 Wildcat lead at halftime. The game was put out of reach by the 'Cats when they went on a 5-0 run during an early 10-minute span to start the second half and go up double digits at 17-4.
Dial, who assisted on Blee's goal in the first half, scored two of the five goals during the run and Sgroi had two assists and a goal.
Davidson dominated the shot column with 41 and had a 15-12 lead in draw controls, while GWU held a 25-20 advantage in groundballs.
The defense was credited with seven forced turnovers, including a career-high five from Kopp. The senior also had tallied a career-high eight groundballs, while Sgroi scooped up nine draw controls for a new personal-best.
Next up for the 'Cats is a mid-week game against Elon, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m. inside Richardson Stadium.
