NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson, the defending Atlantic 10 Champions, has been picked to repeat, as the conference office released the 2019 preseason poll Thursday afternoon.
The Wildcats, who led wire-to-wire en route to claiming their first conference crown in 50 years last April in Orlando, received nine first-place votes and were picked to finish ahead of VCU, Richmond, Dayton and George Mason.
Rhode Island and George Washington tied for sixth with 60 points each, while St. Bonaventure had 56 points for eighth place. Saint Joseph's (35 points), Fordham (23 points) and La Salle (17 points) rounded out the poll, which is voted on by the league head coaches.
Ranked 91st nationally by Golfstat, Davidson finished its fall slate with a win at the Dayton Invitational, a runner-up finish and two third-place showings. The Wildcats finished the four-tournament slate with a 287.72 stroke average.
Individually, Davidson is led by 2017 Individual Champion and two-time all-conference performer Jack Lang, who enters the spring ranked 96th in the country. During the fall, Lang posted a 70.45 stroke average, which included three top-5 finishes, running his career total to nine.
Along with welcoming a pair of talented freshmen in Clayton Tribus and Viraj Garewal to the 2018-19 lineup, the Wildcats also return 2018 A-10 Individual Champion Mike Blasey, 2018 Rookie of the Year Alex Ross, senior Hoke Carlton and junior Michael Freeman.
Under the guidance of three-time conference coach of the year Tim Straub, Davidson will open its spring campaign Feb. 25-26 at the Wexford Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
