ELON, N.C. — One point away from victory, Davidson saw Elon come back to score four straight team points in taking a 4-3 decision over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon in women's tennis.
Originally scheduled for Saturday but moved due to rain, the Wildcats (5-3) jumped out to 3-0 lead, but Elon came back to tie things up and then in a battle that all the way down to a third-set tie-breaker, claimed the match with the win at No. 1 singles.
"Today was a great day of tennis and competition," said Susanne Depka! "I can not be more proud of these young ladies for putting themselves in positions to grow and improve in matches. They continue to transfer what they have practiced onto the match court and if they follow this path, they will get the result they are looking for. We are still focused on our processes, which will help us during this long journey."
It all came down to No. 1 singles where Megan Scholvinck took on Suzanne Zenoni. The first set went to Zenoni, but Scholvinck then pulled out a tough 7-5 decision in the second set. The third set went all the way down to a tie-breaker where Zenoni took it 7-3.
Davidson was leading 1-0 after first taking the doubles point. Scholvinck and Elizabeth Truluck won 6-4 at No. 1, and then Samantha Armas and Alexandra Abele nailed down a 6-1 win. Both teams each won their fifth matches of the year.
The next two points came from Truluck and Armas at No. 5 and 4 singles positions. The freshman Truluck improved to 6-2 after her 6-2, 6-4 win, while Armas won her third straight, and seventh in eight matches overall, with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph.
Elon though came back to tie things up with wins at No. 2, 3 and 6 despite the Wildcats forcing three tie-breakers in each of the matches.
Davidson next plays a neutral site match in Radford, Va., against Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne, Feb. 23.
