DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson wrestling enters year three under head coach Andy Lausier and the process looks to take another step forward in 2019-20.
THE OLD GUARD
The Wildcats have just four upper classmen on the roster, three seniors; Hunter Costa, Conor Fenn and Noah Satterfield, and junior Will Baldwin. Between the four of them, they have competed in 242 bouts.
YOUNG 'CATS
Davidson's youth movement continues as the wrestling room features 14 underclassmen, seven sophomores and seven freshmen. Three returning sophomores saw significant action in their rookie seasons; Kyle Gorant, Finlay Holston and Mitchell Trigg. Evan Clark and Anthony Rautmann return from injuries, while Lachlan Rosato and Erik Eva add depth and experience with a year under their belt.
KEY LOSSES
The 'Cats graduated three seniors from the Class of 2019; Tony Palumbo, Zamir Ode and Aidan Conroy. Palumbo, a team captain last season, placed second at the Southern Conference Championship in the 157-pound weight class. Ode and Conroy both started for the 'Cats last season in the 125 and 149 divisions, respectively.
BUILDING DEPTH
Lausier recruited another deep class, adding seven grapplers to the wrestling room. The group looks to fill some immediate gaps in the lineup and add depth to make practice more competitive. The coaching staff scoured the country, bringing in scholar athletes from six different states.
"We are fired up to welcome the Davidson Wrestling Class of 2023, comprised of seven highly accomplished wrestlers from six different states," said Lausier. "These seven scholar-athletes will be fundamental in providing depth and filling the weight classes of our departing seniors."
2019-20 OUTLOOK
Davidson looks to build upon their sixth-place finish at the 2019 Southern Conference Championship. The 'Cats jumped 9.5 points from their 2018 Championship total. Tony Palumbo '19 took second, while Lausier returns fourth-place finishers Kyle Gorant and Conor Fenn, looking to step onto the podium this season. Now-senior Hunter Costa was also able to advance to the championship second round after a thrilling 4-2 sudden victory open round performance.
WHERE CAN I SEE THEM?
Davidson hosts four duals at Belk Arena beginning with a Southern Conference showdown against Chattanooga, Friday, Nov. 22. Other SoCon home duals include The Citadel (Jan. 17) and Campbell (Feb. 23) on Senior Day. California Baptist makes their inaugural trip to Davidson on Thursday, Jan. 9.
Other notable duals include a return trip to nationally ranked Pittsburgh on Sunday, Feb. 9 and Coach Lausier returns to his old stomping ground at Sacred Heart on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Highlighting the invitation portion of the schedule is the 'Cats first appearance to the Southern Scuffle in 12 years beginning on New Years Day in Chattanooga, Tenn.
"We want to continue to make progress on the teams that are immediately in front of us and start climbing up the ranks. Both in dual meets and the Southern Conference Championship. Lastly, we've added the Southern Scuffle onto our calendar this year … Outside the NCAA Championships, that probably one of the toughest tournaments in the country," said Lausier.
