NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Grace Bunch capped off her stellar second year by representing Davidson in earning a spot on the 2019 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer All-Second Team, as the conference released its annual postseason awards Thursday afternoon.
Bunch becomes the first Wildcat to earn a spot on one of the two all-conference teams, while they have had a player on the all-academic team three times.
"This is great achievement for Mary Grace after a wonderful season for her and the team," said head coach Adam Denton. "The team performed well all season on both sides of the ball and Mary Grace was a big part of our defensive success as a team. We conceded the second fewest goals in the conference this season and we can use this as a platform for future seasons. All of our staff is very pleased for Mary Grace and we are looking forward to future seasons with her and the team."
The sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., set several personal bests during her sophomore campaign. Bunch was a two-time A-10 Defender of the Week during the season, earning it on back-to-back weeks, Sept. 23 & 30.
The goalkeeper started eight of her 11 games played, allowing just six goals in over 950 minutes of action for a 0.57 goals against average, which ranked second in the A-10. Bunch had career highs in saves (42, team best & top-10 in league) as well as shutouts (4.5, top-5 in league). She earned a personal-best 10 saves in a double-overtime draw vs. VCU at home, capping off a stretch of picking up 27 saves in a four-game span.
She helped Davidson set a new school record with eight straight shutouts during an eight-game unbeaten streak (6-0-2), going 3-0-2 during the streak with a pair of ties against VMI and St. Bonaventure, and wins against Saint Joseph's, Duquesne and Rhode Island.
Davidson enjoyed a solid campaign in 2019 with an 8-8-3 record and had its best record since joining the A-10 at 3-5-2, just missing out on earning one of the eight spots in the league championship.
Massachusetts standout Melissa Kössler was named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, and also took home Rookie of the Year Accolades, the second straight year the same player has garnered those honors. Courtney Reimer of Saint Louis was voted the league's Midfielder of the Year, while Billiken teammate Alli Klug was named Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. SLU's Katie Shields also earned her second straight A-10 Women's Soccer Regular Season title and Coach of the Year nod.
The league's head coaches voted on the awards and also selected the 11-member First Team and 12-member Second Team All-Conference (as result of a tie), as well as the All-Rookie squad. An 11-member All-Academic team was also selected, based on a vote of the women's soccer media relations directors at each of the 14-member institutions.
