
Shea & Schaffer Earn National Ranking in Fall ITA Ratings

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis freshmen Franny Shea and Josie Schaffer earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings recently when the national organization released its final Fall rankings and the duo were tied for 114th. The ITA ranks the top 125 singles players and top 60 doubles teams in the country.
In the final Fall rankings, Shea and Schaffer earned four points in the rating to be two of eight singles players tied at 114th overall in the nation.
Throughout the fall schedule of the pairs first collegiate seasons, Shea and Schaffer enjoy solid success at the four events they took part in. Shea opened her Fall season with three wins at the Queens invite, while Schaffer netted two wins as well.
The duo followed with another two singles wins at the UNCW Invitational. Schaffer and Shea defeated their Charlotte 49er opponents on the strength of 0-6, 6-0, 1-0(8) and 7-5, 6-1 decisions, while scoring wins of 7-5, 6-2 and 6-7(5), 7-5, 1-0(5) against a pair of Seahawk opponents.
After another two more wins at the Elon Invitational, Shea and Schaffer each won the Eagle flight, making the finals and then earning exhibition wins as well at the North Carolina Central Invitational. Shea won a pair of hard-fought three-set matches, taking a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 decision vs. Victoria Dixon of ECU and then coming from a set down, 4-6, to earn back-to-back 6-4 victories against Campbell's Ciara O'Toole. The first-year player then won a 6-1, 7-5 exhibition win vs. Sofia Miller of NCCU.
Schaffer opened her singles play with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 win against her opponent from UNCW. She then downed Huda McGraw of ECU by the count of 6-2, 6-2 before closing out with a 6-3, 6-3 win vs. Sarah Horn of UNCW in an exhibition match.
Davidson will next prepare for the Spring season, which begins Monday, Jan. 20 at Furman.
