The Davidson field hockey team concluded the 2019 season with a 4-0 home loss to Richmond Friday night at Belk Turf Field.
The Wildcats finish 3-16 overall and 1-7 in the Atlantic 10, as Richmond moved to 10-8 and 6-2.
"I am so grateful to our seniors for all that they have given to this program," said first-year Davidson coach Zoe Almquist. "This year has been about the journey, and taking the right steps along the path, rather than the destination. And I have the seniors to thank for guiding us through those first steps down that path."
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Zeszotarski kept the Wildcats in it with stop after stop in the cage, despite defending against 10 corners and 21 shots. She matched her season-high with 12 saves, which she also had against Lock Haven on Sept. 22.
"Sarah played amazing," said Almquist. "She kept us fighting the entire 60 minutes. As a group we didn't give up — and that was one of our goals going in."
The Spiders took a 1-0 lead on Steffie Bongers' early goal after Richmond secured multiple corners in the first minute. Addie Nash's goal in the 19th minute made it 2-0 at the break, and Elise Zwicklbauer scored in the 40th minute. Lindsey Frank's goal with 11:05 to play finalized the scoring.
