NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After helping guide Davidson to a 2-0 opening weekend, the duo of Samantha Armas and Elizabeth Truluck were each honored by the Atlantic 10 today by being named the Player and Rookie of the Weeks for matches played from Jan. 14-20.
The weekly award for Armas was her third overall after claiming a pair of rookie of the week honors as a freshman in 2017.
The Wildcats (2-0) opened with 4-3 and 6-1 wins on the road at Appalachian State and UNC Asheville, and Armas along with Truluck each played a big part in the wins. The pair each went 4-0 in singles and doubles.
Armas, a native from Acworth, Ga., kept her singles winning streak intact dating back to last season at a personal-best seven in a row after scoring 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 and 7-5, 6-2 wins at No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively. The three-set victory vs. ASU was clutch as it was the clinching point to seal up the 4-3 win.
She teamed up with Alexandra Abele at No. 2 doubles and netted wins of 6-2 and 7-6 to push her career doubles total to 24 in 37 matches.
A native of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Truluck had a stellar start to her collegiate career by picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win vs. the Mountaineers at No. 5 and then moved up to No. 4 vs. the Bulldogs to earn a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 victory.
In doubles, the freshman partnered with Megan Scholvinck at No. 1 and cruised to 6-3 and 6-1 triumphs as the Wildcats won both doubles points in each match.
Davidson has its home opener next Saturday against Queens of Charlotte at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
