DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Sydney McKenna netted a pair of goals, but Davidson field hockey fell to Appalachian State in double overtime of a non-conference contest at Belk Turf Field Friday night, 3-2.
With the loss Davidson falls to 2-3 on the season, while with the win the Mountaineers improve to 4-1 overall.
Up 2-1 in the final minutes of the game thanks to a first half and a quick second frame scoring strike from McKenna, the Wildcats were poised to defeat their in-state foe on home soil, but App State had other ideas.
With 3:04 remaining in regulation, Mountaineer Veerle Van Heertum scored off a penalty corner to knot the game at 2-2 and send it to overtime. After a quiet first 10 minute extra period, Van Heertum registered her second of the night and the game-winner early in the second extra frame to claim the sudden victory win.
The 'Cats owned control and momentum in the first half, outshooting App State, 4-1, including McKenna's first goal in the 19th minute. After App State tied it up late in the first, McKenna quickly regained control for the 'Cats with her second of the day just over five minutes into the second.
The Mountaineers ended up outshooting Davidson 13-5 in the half and 17-11 for the game. App State also posted 10 shots on goal to Davidson's 7. Wildcat goalkeeper Sarah Zeszotarski made 7 saves in just over 82 minutes of work in cage.
Davidson senior Leigha Nortier led the team with 4 shots, 2 of those on cage. Classmate Courtney Byler had a great opportunity to put the game away on a penalty corner, but App State's Annette Jarosz slammed the door for the Mountaineers first defensive save of the season.
The 'Cats hit the road for the first time Sunday, Sep. 9 when they head to Farmville, Va. for a neautral site game against UC Davis. Game time is slated to start at 1 p.m. from the campus of Longwood University.
