DAVIDSON, N.C. – With fall practice underway, seniors Eric Jones, Max Bazin and Casey Sutherland have been named team captains for the 2019 season, Davidson baseball coach Rucker Taylor announced Thursday.
All played key roles for a Wildcats team that won a school-record 32 regular season games last spring.
"Casey, Eric and Max have each been important players for us from the day they stepped on campus," said Taylor. "Casey has been used as both a weekend starter and closer; Max has played center field and shortstop, and Eric has caught, played both corners of the infield and served as designated hitter. In addition to what they have done on the field, each guy is respected by his teammates, and these three have done a great job in their roles as captains. Collectively, the senior class has done an exceptional job of welcoming the new guys and upholding the standards of our program. This is a special class and I'm happy they are here and representing Davidson."
While anchoring the defense from behind the plate last season, Jones also led the Wildcats offensively, including in batting average (.333), on-base percentage (.443), hits (67), doubles (14), home runs (11, along with Justin Lebek) and RBI (60). The Charlotte native (South Mecklenburg High) was named Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week Feb. 26 after going 6-for-13 with 3 home runs, 17 RBI and a 1.308 slugging percentage and was a second-team selection in the Atlantic 10.
Bazin, the Wildcats' other former South Meck standout, hit .301 with 7 doubles and hit 2 triples, tying for the team lead with Cam Johnson.
Sutherland (Apopka, Fla.) was 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA and a team-leading 6 saves in 21 appearances and 43.2 innings.
Bazin and Sutherland were named to the 2018 A-10 All-Academic Team.
Captains excited for the fall
"The start of fall practice sets the tone for the remainder of the offseason. The effort and competition we put forth now will determine our success in the spring."
-Casey Sutherland
"Every guy on the team seems extremely excited to get things going this fall and start putting in the work to achieve our goal come spring. We all desire to bring another A-10 Championship back to Davidson and seem more willing than ever to do whatever it takes."
-Max Bazin
"Really excited for the start of Fall ball. Guys have been working harder than ever. We have a great group of guys with a talented freshman class. I can't wait to see the great things this group can accomplish on the field."
