RICHMOND, Va. – The men's cross country team opened the season with a youth movement as the first seven Davidson runners to cross the line made their collegiate debut Saturday at the Spider Alumni Opener.
The Wildcats registered 68 points to take third overall. William & Mary (26) and host Richmond (52) led the six-team field.
Davidson rookie Coleman Mitchell traversed the 5k course in 15:31.7, crossing the line in fifth overall in his first collegiate race. Classmate Trent Turbyfill also came home in the top 10, placing ninth (15:43.8).
"This was a really good opener for our young guys," said head coach Renny Waldron. "It was a great opportunity for us to gain some valuable race experience on that course and we are looking forward to coming back in eight weeks for the A-10 Championship."
Filling out the scoring for the Wildcats were Colin Ross (15:57.6), Alex Ackerman (16:09.6) and Jonah Lane (16:09.9), while George Lewis and Max Pearson filled out the first seven, placing within the top 32 positions with Davidson seniors Dylan Carmack and Will Jones not competing.
The 'Cats return to the start line Friday, Sep. 14 at the ADIDAS XC Challenge hosted by North Carolina State University.
