DAVIDSON, N.C. — The 2018 season gets underway this weekend for the Davidson women's soccer team when they play host to Coastal Carolina Friday night and then welcome USC Upstate Monday evening at Alumni Stadium.
The Matchup ...
Davidson, entering its 30th year of women's soccer, will welcome the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (11-8-1, 4-5-1 Sun Belt last year) at Alumni Stadium Friday, Aug. 17, for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Monday, the Wildcats will take on the Spartans of USC Upstate (6-10-1, 1-5-1 Big South) in a 7 p.m. contest at Alumni Stadium to wrap up their first weekend of games.
Wildcat Welcome Week ...
Monday's game will be "Wildcat Welcome Week" as the Davidson students will be returning to campus after the summer break and are encouraged to come out and cheer on the 'Cats. For all students coming to Monday's game, there will be a FREE tailgate with grilled food provided.
The All-Time Series/Last Meetings ...
Davidson will be facing the Chanticleers for the fourth time (1-1-1) dating back to the first meeting in 2013. A year ago, the Wildcats went to Conway, S.C., and dropped a tough 1-0 decision. The game vs. USCU will be the first meeting between both schools.
A-10 Preseason ...
The Atlantic 10 preseason poll came out earlier this week and the Saint Louis Billikens were chosen as the Atlantic 10 Conference preseason favorite in a vote conducted by the league's 14 head coaches. The league's head coaches also voted for an 11-member preseason all-conference team.
The Billikens (15-3-2, 7-2-1 A-10 last year) earned 192 votes and ten first-place tallies to take the top spot in the rankings. La Salle ranked second in the predicted order of finish with 184 points and four first-place votes, followed by Duquesne and George Mason, who each tallied 145 votes to round out the top four spots. Davidson received 36 votes and was tied with St. Bonaventure for 12th place.
Season and Home Openers ...
The Wildcats are 12-17 all-time in season openers after taking a 4-0 win over Gardner-Webb a year ago on their home field at Alumni Stadium. All four goals were netted in the second half. The win also pushed the 'Cats record to 17-12 all-time in home openers.
Scouting the Wildcats ...
•This is Davidson's 30th year of women's soccer.
•Head coach Adam Denton enters his second year at the helm of the program.
•Friday's game marks the eighth consecutive year the Wildcats will start their season at home.
•24 letterwinners return from last season, including six starters.
