DAVIDSON, N.C. — Head coach Kim Wayne and the Davidson women's lacrosse team recently selected their team captains for the 2019 season and trio of rising seniors Sarah Kopp, Sophia Sgroi and Lindsay Rufolo along with rising junior Shayne Antolini were tabbed captains.
All four players helped to contribute to an outstanding season during the 2018 campaign, which saw the Wildcats go 11-8 overall and 5-4 in Atlantic 10 play while reaching the semifinals of the A-10 Championship for the second consecutive year.
Kopp, who was a team captain this past Spring, again had an all-around solid year and capped it off by being named to the A-10 All-First Team, while earning a spot on the A-10 All-Academic Team for the second straight season. She set several personal bests, finishing with career highs of 30 goals (third-most on the team) and 33 points on offense to go with 36 groundballs, 71 draw controls (tops on the team) and 15 caused turnovers. The junior from Victor, N.Y. started 14 of her 19 games played. Kopp's 71 draw controls were the second-most in a Wildcat single season.
The midfielder, who had nine multi-goal games with six hat tricks on the season, also set several single game highs this year including points (4), shots (7), draw controls (7) and caused turnovers (3). Kopp has excelled in the classroom as well and is a six-time A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree, becoming the first Wildcat to be named to the all-academic team twice.
A native of Winchester, Mass., Sgroi enjoyed a breakout season with career highs of 23 goals, nine assists and 32 points on offense. The midfielder also recorded personal bests with 11 groundballs and 58 draw controls, which was the sixth-most in a single season.
Sgroi set several single game career bests during the year, including points (5), assists (3) and draw controls (8). She recorded six multi-goal games, finishing out the year strong with three of them on her way to registering eight total goals and nine points in the last four games.
Rufolo was apart of a Wildcat defense that was one of the best in the A-10, ranking second in both groundballs (393) and goals against average (9.59). The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native started all 19 games this past Spring, earning three assists (the first of her career) and personal bests of 25 groundballs and 19 caused turnovers (second on the team). Four times she had multiple groundballs and caused turnovers in a game, setting a career high with four groundballs vs. Richmond and three times tying a career best with three caused turnovers in a game.
A midfielder from Babylon, N.Y., Antolini was a steady contributor on offense. She set up her teammates with a career and team-high 23 assists to go with eight goals in 19 games, starting each one of them. Antolini opened the 2018 season with a new career-high five assists in a road win at Furman and went on to add five more multi-assist outings during the season. In addition, the midfielder also added personal bests of 20 groundballs and 31 draw controls for the year.
An A-10 All-Rookie Team member in 2017, Antolini has filled up the stat sheet in just two seasons with 26 goals, 43 assists and 69 points, while adding 37 groundballs and 56 draw controls in 37 career games.
Davidson's 11-8 record this past season, which included a pair of four-game winning streaks, was its best since going 12-7 in its final year in the Big South in 2014. The Wildcats will return 17 letterwinners for the 2019 campaign, including nine starters.
