NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After a solid regular season, Davidson was honored by having five players earn Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse postseason honors with the release of the season-ending major award winners and all-conference teams Wednesday by the conference office.
Junior tri-captain Sarah Kopp was named to the first team at midfield and also earned a spot on the all-academic team for the second straight season. Goalie Rose Woolson joined Kopp on the league's first team, while freshmen Olivia Carey and Natalie Junior were named to the 12-member all-rookie team. Rounding the honors was senior tri-captain Rachel Hianik by being named to the A-10 All-Academic Team, her second league award after earning all-rookie team honors in 2015.
This marks the first time since joining the Atlantic 10 the Wildcats have had five players earn postseason honors, while it is the fourth consecutive year they have had at least three players earn honors overall.
Kopp had a stellar all-around regular season, setting several personal bests along the way. She finished with career highs of 29 goals (second-best on the team) and 32 points on offense to go with 35 groundballs, 62 draw controls (tops on the team) and 14 caused turnovers. The junior from Victor, N.Y. started 12 of the 17 games played. Kopp's 62 draw controls are currently fifth-most in a Wildcat single season.
The midfielder, who had nine multi-goal games with six hat tricks, also set several single game highs this year including points (4), shots (7), draw controls (7) and caused turnovers (3). Kopp has excelled in the classroom as well and is a five-time A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree, becoming the first Wildcat to be named to the all-academic team twice.
On the defensive front, Woolson has been one of the best in the A-10 this year. A senior tri-captain from Baltimore, Md., Woolson, who was named to the A-10 All-Second Team in 2016, leads the league in saves percentage and is second in groundballs (team-best 53), goals against average (8.34) and goals against (116).
The senior goalie recorded nine multi-save games during the regular season, including stopping a career-high 19 shots at home against Colgate, March 10. Nine times Woolson held the opposition to single digit goals, with a personal-best zero in just one half against Gardner-Webb. She also gave up just two goals in a road win at St. Bonaventure.
Woolson's name is scattered throughout the Wildcats' all-time record books, ranking fourth in minutes, and third in saves (432), goals against average (9.87) and groundballs (157). Her current 8.35 GAA this year is tops in a single season.
Joining Kopp on the academic team was Hianik. The senior has been a steady leader on the defensive end, scooping up a career-high 31 groundballs and forcing 10 turnovers. A native of Raleigh, N.C., Hianik has started all 68 of her career games played. She has also excelled in the classroom by being named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll seven times.
The freshmen duo Carey and Junior have been solid contributors in their first year on the offensive and defensive ends. From Blue Bell, Pa., Carey has started 11 of the Wildcats' 17 games and is second on the team with 22 assists, while finding the back of the net 15 times. She is third overall on the team in points (37), having registered 10 multi-point games including a season-best six in a 14-10 win vs. La Salle when the freshman dished out five assists to go with a goal.
Junior, a native of Wayne, Pa., has stepped into the starting lineup from day one and started all 17 games. The freshman defender is third on the team with 33 groundballs and 31 draw controls, while forcing a team-best 23 turnovers. She has helped the defense to the second-most groundballs (363) in the A-10.
Richmond claimed three of the five top awards, taking home A-10 Offensive (Kim Egizi) and Defensive (Julie Ball) Players of the Year, while Allison Kwolek was co-coach of the year with VCU's Jen O'Brien. In addition, Stephanie Croke of Massachusetts was the midfielder of the year and George Mason's Erin Donoghue was named the rookie of the year.
Davidson, sitting at 10-7 overall and riding a three-game win streak, begins the A-10 Championship by facing fourth-seeded VCU Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals at Robins Stadium on the campus of Richmond.
