DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson gears up for its third Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship Thursday afternoon when it takes on fourth-seeded VCU at 11:30 a.m. at Robins Stadium on the campus of Richmond.
The Wildcats, seeded fifth, are making their third straight appearance in the league tournament in just their fourth year in the conference. They closed out the regular season strong, winning their final three games on the road at Duquesne, St. Bonaventure and George Washington.
The Opening Draw Control ...
Davidson (10-7, 5-4 A-10) reached the A-10 Lacrosse Championship by earning the fifth seed after going 5-4 during the regular season in league play for the third consecutive season. It will face off against fourth-seeded VCU on Thursday, May 3, at 11:30 a.m. Should the Wildcats advance, they would take on top-seeded UMass Friday at 1 p.m.
A-10 Tournament ...
This is Davidson's third trip to the A-10 tournament in its fourth year in the conference. The championship was expanded to six teams in 2016 for the first time.
Last year saw the 'Cats reach the semifinals for the first time with a dramatic comeback win against George Mason, 14-13, before fall to top-seeded UMass 21-6. The Wildcats have a 1-2 record in the tournament.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting ...
Thursday's contest vs. VCU will mark the fourth meeting all-time, with Davidson holding a 2-1 advantage. In this year's meeting, the Wildcats led 11-8 with under 16 minutes to go before the Rams scored the final four goals including the game-winner 39 seconds into overtime to claim a 12-11 win.
If Davidson advances to the semifinals, it will be seeking its first win in the series vs. UMass in what would be the sixth meeting. The Wildcats went on the road in this year's matchup and were held scoreless in the first half and dropped a 14-4 decision.
Last Time Out for the 'Cats ...
Davidson used a 6-0 run in the early stages of the second half to break up a tightly played game and went on to score a 15-10 road victory at George Washington in both teams final regular season Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse game at GW Lacrosse Field.
The victory gave the 'Cats a three-game winning streak and helped them hit the double-digit mark for the first time since the 2014 season when they went 12-7 overall.
Down 7-6 after GW scored the first two goals of the new half, Davidson got goals from six different Wildcats starting at the 25-minute mark and ending at 18:52 to grab a 12-7 lead. It would maintain a three-goal lead the rest of the way for the win.
Jordan Wood broke out of a mini-scoring slump by recording a career-best seven points on five goals and a personal-best two assists. The sophomore, who had scored just five goals total in the past five games combined, netted four goals in the first half, and tallied a goal and two assists during the 'Cats' game-changing run.
