ORLANDO, Fla. – Led by Hoke Carlton's one-over 73, Davidson sits atop the team leaderboard with Dayton, after day one of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship Friday on the Par 72, 7,024-yard Villas of Grand Cypress layout.
A junior from Charlotte, Carlton is tied for fourth, two shots out of the lead following a birdie, two bogeys and 15 pars.
The first team off the tee at 7:30 a.m., Davidson posted a 300 (+12) almost two hours prior to the Flyers, who were tabbed the preseason favorites. The Wildcats and Dayton lead a tightly contested leaderboard where just eight strokes separate first and seventh place.
VCU (303) is third, three shots back followed by Richmond (304), George Mason (305) and Saint Joseph's (305).
Dayton's Tripp French (71 | -1) fired the only sub-par round to grab the individual lead.
Mike Blasey (T-6th) finished his day with a team-best five birdies before shooting two-over 74, while Alex Ross (T-11th) and Jack Lang (T-23), the defending champion, recorded rounds of 75 and 78, respectively.
Ross held a share of the lead for most of the round until suffering back-to-back sevens on 15 and 16. The freshman bounced back with a birdie on his final hole to shoot three-over.
Sophomore Michael Freeman (T-44/83) is also competing for Davidson this weekend.
Davidson will be paired with Dayton and VCU in Saturday's second round with tee times beginning at 9:45 a.m.
Live scoring for all three days will be available at GolfStat.com.
