Wildcats' Win Streak Halted at Elon

ELON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team saw their season-high six-match win streak come to an end Wednesday on the road in a 7-0 defeat to Elon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (12-5) did their best to try and get win number seven in a row, playing four hard-fought three-set singles matches at No. 2, 3, 4 and 6, but came up short in each one of them. They won the first set in each of the matches only to see Elon win the next two sets to earn the four team points.
Senior Shamael Chaudhry, fresh off being named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, saw his singles winning streak come to an end at five in a row at No. 2. He won his first set 6-4, before falling 6-2 and 6-3 in the next two sets.
At No. 3, Axel Fries fell to 11-5 on the season when he dropped a 6-4, 1-6, 4-6 decision. Fellow classmate Thomas Mason won his first set 6-3, but like Chaudhry and Fries, came up short in the next two sets at 6-3 and 6-2.
The final three-setter was Jack Riazzi's match at No. 6 where the senior saw his three-match winning streak halted after a 7-6, 4-6, 3-6 defeat. It was just his third setback of the season in 13 matches.
David Hager also had his singles win streak halted at two in a row after a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at No. 5.
Elon (12-5) took the doubles point with wins of 6-3 and 6-2 at No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. The duo of Artem Kharpko and Fries played to an even 4-4 tie at No. 1, keeping their winning streak alive at six straight.
Davidson wraps up a four-match road trip this weekend by taking on UNCG, March 31, at 12 p.m.
