NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After leading Davidson to a 2-0 record last week, the duo of Jordan Wood and Rose Woolson were named the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Player and Defender of the Week, as announced by the league office for games played from March 12-18.
The weekly award for Wood, who shared it with Jocelyn Donohue of George Washington, is the first of her career, while Woolson won her second defender of the week award this year and sixth for her career.
The duo was outstanding last week in wins against Iona (10-8) and at Campbell (13-6) to help the Wildcats snap their three-game losing streak. Wood led the offense with seven goals on 11 shots to go with three groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control. A career-high six of those goals came in the victory at Campbell as she scored three in each half. In addition, the sophomore forced both of her turnovers, a personal best, in the game as well and went a perfect 2-for-2 on free-position shots.
A native of Hockessin, Del., Wood paces the team with a career-high 18 goals and is second overall with 19 points. She is a team-best 8-of-14 on free-position shots.
Woolson picked up her 18th and 19th career wins between the pipes by finishing with 24 saves and a 7.00 goals against average. She had a save percentage of 63.2 percent and scooped up seven groundballs for the week.
The two-time defender of the week registered 10 saves at home vs. Iona and then stopped 14 shots on the road at Campbell, allowing just six goals which was the second fewest she has allowed this season. The two double-digit save games gave her five on the season, with three of them being 14-save outings.
It has been a solid season for the Baltimore, Md., native, ranking first in the A-10 in groundballs (25), minutes (417:45) and saves (79). Woolson is fourth in the nation in save percentage at .554, and 11th in both GAA (8.76) and saves per game (11.00).
Davidson returns home to take on another Big South foe in Gardner-Webb this coming Wednesday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m.
