NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After another high-powered offensive weekend, baseball's Eric Jones claims his second Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honor this season, the league announced Monday afternoon.
A former National Player of the Week, Jones led the 'Cats to a perfect 5-0 week, including their second win over an opponent receiving votes in the national polls. The Charlotte, N.C., product hit for .450, tallying nine hits (four for extra bases) and driving in 13. He scored six times and struck out just once in 23 plate appearances, tallying multi-hit affairs in each of the 'Cats three weekend games. The utility player recorded multiple RBI in each of Davidson's five games, registering three each on three separate occasions. He split time this week between first base and serving as the 'Cats backstop, recording 33 putouts.
Recently named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, Jones recorded a .500 on-base percentage and a .900 slugging, blasting two long balls. He also registered his first career triple, a ball deep in the right center gap that he nearly legged out for an inside-the-parker.
With his 13 this past week, Jones is now tied for the national lead in runs batted in with NC State's All-American Brett Kinneman, each with 32. The junior ranks second nationally in RBI per game (1.68) and tops the league in home runs (5), on-base percentage (.500), slugging percentage (.712). He sits in the Top 3 in runs (18) and walks (15), behind current teammates in both.
Jones is the fourth Wildcat to earn A-10 Player of the Week honors and just the second to ever earn the honor twice in the same season, joining four-time All-American Will Robertson '17, who was named twice a year ago.
