DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the second time in the past three matches, a Davidson men's tennis match went down to the final singles match with the Wildcats this time pulling out a 4-3 thriller at home against East Carolina Saturday afternoon inside the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (2-2), who fell 4-3 to Gardner-Webb in the other down-to-the-wire finish, gave the Pirates (4-1) their first defeat of the season thanks to senior Jack Riazzi's three-set win at No. 5 singles. The match went the distance, going into a tie-breaker in the third set. Riazzi secured a strong win with a 7-5 decision to finish the match, 6-0, 2-6, 7-6.
"Another great match today," said head coach Drew Barrett. "Jack did a great job of stepping up in the closing points of the tie-breaker and it was a great effort all around for the team. These tough matches are going to pay off at the end of the season."
ECU grabbed a 1-0 lead after winning a 7-4 tie-breaker at No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point. It had won a 6-4 decision at No. 1. David Hager and Shamael Chaudhry moved to 2-1 on the season with an easy 6-1 win at No. 2.
Sophomore Thomas Mason tied things up with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 shutout win at No. 4 singles, as his match was the first one completed. He moved to a team-best 4-0 on the year, his longest career winning streak.
Davidson went up 3-1 after Chaudhry followed with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 for his second win in a row and then fellow classmate Artem Khrapko won his first match as a ranked player with a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 1.
Axel Fries had a chance to seal up the team win, but fell in a tight tie-breaker at No. 3 singles, 7-5, after splitting the first two sets, 4-6 and 6-1, while the Pirates tied the match up with a win at No. 6 to set up the final singles match at No. 5.
Davidson will play its first two road matches of the season with trips to UIC and DePaul, Feb. 10 & 11.
