GREENSBORO, N.C. – Davidson baseball (7-1) cruised to victory Tuesday, picking up a 12-3 victory over North Carolina A&T (3-5) at historic War Memorial Stadium.
Junior Max Bazin led the offense with three hits and two RBI, while senior Cam Johnson, sophomores Brett Centracchio and Greg Lowe, junior Eric Jones, and freshman Alex Mardiney all turned in two hits each. Jones, Mardiney, Lowe, and junior Justin Lebek all scored twice.
After a quiet opening stanza, the 'Cats broke through, plating two runs in the second and six runs in the third.
After Jones and Lebek boarded on back-to-back walks, Lowe registered his first collegiate hit, smacking the ball into shallow right center field, bringing Jones home. Lebek then came home after his classmate singled back up the middle.
In the same fashion, the 'Cats led off the third with another free pass- this one being issued to senior Alec Acosta. The rally then started courtesy of three straight singles from Centracchio, Jones, and Lebek, putting Davidson in control 4-0.
Jones then scored on a wild pitch and Lowe drove in his second run of the afternoon, scoring Lebek. Bazin then found success again, singling to bring home Mardiney, who reached via walk. Lowe scored the final run of the frame, coming home courtesy of an Aggie throwing error.
The 'Cats added a run in the seventh, once again with Lowe and Bazin in prime production form. The former was walked and then advanced two bases on a single to left center from Bazin. Lowe then scored on a fielder's choice from Johnson.
The Aggies scored their first run in the fourth after a passed ball, fielding error and sac fly, and added a run in the seventh after a walk and back-to-back singles. They scored again in the eighth on a single to right center.
Davidson added excitement in the ninth, after sophomore Matt Frey launched a pinch-hit two-run homer over the right field wall, and Johnson came home on a groundout from Acosta.
Reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week Connor Gordon improves to 2-1 on the year after going five innings, scattering just three hits and recording a new career-high five strikeouts.
The Wildcats return to Wilson Field, hosting Lehigh in a three-game series beginning Friday, March 2.
