NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Davidson took two of the three weekly awards from the league office after senior Connor Gordon and junior Eric Jones were named Atlantic 10 Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. The league office announced the winners Monday afternoon, shortly after Jones was chosen as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.
In just his second collegiate start of his career, Gordon delivered a dynamic performance, tossing six shutout no-hit innings against 2017 NCAA Super Regional participant (RV) Wake Forest.
The North Bellmore, N.Y., native faced just one batter over the minimum, working three-up, three-down frames for the first five consecutive innings. He allowed just one walk as he earned his first win of the season, picking up four punch outs against the Demon Deacons, who led the nation a year ago in home runs. His four strikeouts tied a career-high as he threw his longest career outing.
Gordon is just the third Davidson pitcher to ever claim the honor, but the second this season after junior Allen Barry took the plaudit last week.
Jones ignited during the week, posting a .462 average after going 6-for-13 and guiding the 'Cats to four victories. Five of Jones' hits were for extra-bases, including three homers (one grand slam). He also drove in 17 during the week, a Davidson record for a single week.
The Charlotte, N.C., native, who started at catcher all four games this week, clubbed two homers in Davidson's Sunday sweep of Georgetown, including his first collegiate grand slam off the Hoyas' All-American Cape Cod League reliever. It was the third time in his career he's had a multi-homer game, and he also went yard and doubled in Saturday's contest. Jones' long ball Saturday was a part of a school-record setting day for the 'Cats, where their seven homers set a new single-game record.
He drove in two against Wake Forest, three in Friday's contest, five on Saturday, and seven Sunday, after breaking the 5-5 tie with Georgetown in the bottom of the sixth.
The junior, who was a 2017 A-10 All-Championship team selection and fell one hit shy of the A-10 tournament record, posted a 1.308 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base clip.
Jones is the fourth Wildcat to earn Player of the Week honors, joining now-graduated legends Will Robertson, Brian Fortier, and Jake Sidwell. He and Gordon join Barry and infielders Brett Centracchio and Max Bazin as 'Cats on the current roster to be awarded a weekly honor from the A-10. Both were named Rookie of the Week during their respective freshman campaigns.
Davidson won all four of its contests by a margin of 38-15 and is now 6-1 on the season. They prepare for their first road test Tuesday, traveling to Greensboro, N.C., to face North Carolina A&T.
