Wrestling opens with solid showing at Southeast Open

ROANOKE, Va. – Davidson freshman Mitchell Trigg swept the heavyweight freshman/sophomore bracket of the Southeast Open Sunday in wrestling's first meet of the season at Virginia Tech.
The Foley, Minn., native got his collegiate debut off started with a bang, pinning his first opponent from VMI in just 68 seconds. Trigg then went on to win by decision in the quarterfinal round over West Virginia, semis over an opponent from King and outlasted Brandon Streck of Indiana, 9-3.
Freshman Kyle Gorant also got his collegiate career started on the right foot, pinning his first two opponents, each in the first round. He finished 2-2 on the day.
Fellow rookie Lachlan Rosato went 2-2 on the day, earning a pair of decision victories in the 197-pound consolation bracket. Classmate Caleb Ziebell also won a pair of consolation matches including his first collegiate fall, pinning Bluefield's Hunter Alto in just 45 seconds.
Senior Tony Palumbo opened the season with win over a Southern Conference foe, outlasting Christian Beach of Appalachian State in a decision, 8-5. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native fell in the ensuing quarterfinal match at 157 pounds by way of fall in the third round.
Davidson junior Hunter Costa survived a tightly contested decision against Matt Kirkland of Limestone, 13-12. Costa fell in the ensuing round to a competitor from West Virginia, 12-0.
Wildcat senior Aidan Conroy bounced back from an opening round loss with an 11-5 decision over Gino Esposito of North Carolina in the 149-pound class. Junior Conor Fenn did the same, recovering from a first round pin to claim a 12-8 decision over Raekwon Reggler of Limestone.
Davidson returns to the mats Tuesday, Nov. 13 when they host Greensboro for the first dual of the season. First bout with the Lions is slated for 7 p.m.
