AMHERST, Mass. – Lucas Hauth scored a pair of second-half goals and Davidson remained unbeaten in the Atlantic 10 with a 2-0 win at Massachusetts, Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field.
In addition to being 4-0-1 in league play, the Wildcats are unbeaten in seven of their last eight, improving to 8-4-1 overall. UMass, last year's tournament champs, falls to 6-7-2 and 2-4-0.
Hauth, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, thanks to another two-goal performance in Davidson's win over Saint Joseph's last Wednesday, broke open a scoreless contest with strikes in the 60th and 68th minutes.
The eventual game-winner, Hauth's second of the season, came off a rebound that he put away in the right corner.
Less than eight minutes later, he tracked down and scored on a Henry Howell attempt that was saved by the UMass keeper.
Sawyer Gaffney stopped three shots for the Wildcats en route to his fourth clean sheet of the 2018 campaign.
Up Next
Davidson returns to Alumni Stadium for three straight beginning with a 6 p.m. contest Saturday against Fordham, which advanced to the Elite Eight in last year's NCAA Tournament.
Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
Very proud of the team to earn the win and get a shutout on the road. UMass won the conference tournament last season and they really pushed all the way to the end.
We started the game really well with some good attacking from Jaylen and Lucas getting 2-3 quality chances, including one shot off the post.
The weather took a turn as the first half wore on, and the rain and wind broke up some of our flow and rhythm.
Lucas took his second-half chances really well. His first goal/game-winner was created by Jamie re-pressing to win it back in the attacking third and passing forward when they were disjointed.
It was a real team effort to get the shutout – blocking shots and competing with tons of aerial balls, while handling their height.
The guys have created a strong core culture. They are hard working, balanced, selfless and fun.
Very thankful for the important work that our Athletic Trainer Chase Landers delivers. He's keeping our guys as healthy as a team can be at this point in the season.
