DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey dropped their 2017 home opener Sunday, falling 2-1 to Longwood at Belk Turf Field.
The 'Cats lone goal came from senior captain Anna Brewer, who scored off a Leigha Nortier-inserted corner about 15 minutes into the second period. Brewer finished the day with two shots on-target, and led Davidson with three total.
Sophomore keeper Sarah Zeszotarski, in her second-straight start in the cage, logged a career-high nine saves.
The Wildcats managed just one shot in the first half, a blocked attempt from junior Kristin Kisa.
The second half was a role reversal, as Davidson controlled possession and drew seven corners to the Lancers' two. The Wildcats took a risk late in the period, pulling Zeszotarski and adding an extra forward in the final three minutes in an attempt to net the equalizer.
Longwood attacked early, scoring within the first five minutes of the contest off of a penalty stroke, and then added what would be the game-winner in the 13th minute, as Edel Nyland rebounded her own shot after the first ricocheted of the cross bar.
Davidson returns to action Friday, remaining at home as the 'Cats begin Atlantic 10 play by welcoming defending A-10 Tournament champions UMass to Belk Turf Field.
