DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's cross country team boasts a young, but talented roster heading into the 2017 season.
The 'Cats lost a few key competitors from a year ago including Atlantic 10 Championship third place finisher and All-Conference team member, Walker Mogen. Also graduating was Will Brewster, who led the squad in three meets last season, winning the 2016 season opener at the Spider Alumni Open.
"It is going to be tough to replace Walker, who was our captain and led on and off the cross country course last year, but we have a few guys who we believe will emerge as leaders as the season unfolds," said head coach Renny Waldron.
The 2017 'Cats boast a young squad with just a pair of seniors, Ramsay Ritchie and Ian Robertson. Junior's Dylan Carmack and William Jones along with sophomore Sam Thomas look to mix it up with a class of six freshmen.
"We have a very young team, almost half the roster consists of freshman, so that transition might take a little time and we will have to be patient with that, but this group is capable of great things. It's going to be an exciting year," said Waldron.
Waldron enters his third year at the helm of Davidson. In 2015-16, he guided the program to a third place result at the A-10 Championship, a squad that boasted three All-Conference team members.
The Wildcats 2017 campaign features four meets leading up to the A-10 Championship beginning with the Charlotte Preview Meet Friday, Sept. 1 in Concord, N.C. Davidson will get a preview of the league championship course when they race at the Mason XC Invitational. The A-10 Championship is slated for Saturday, Oct. 28, while the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet goes off on Friday, Nov. 10.
